Right.

A kid says he can't remember the PIN on his library card, so I ask him to give me his name and birthdate. He knows the name, but when I ask him his birthdate, he says "oh, I don't keep track of that sort of thing."

Well, too bad. Maybe you should ask your mom.

I haven't had a kid not being able to recite their birthday. What I have had is kids who cannot recite their phone number or address. These aren't preschool kids either. These are tweens. When I was growing up, this was virtually unheard of (I'm 34 now). The kids not knowing their phone number or address is quite common.

I think what's happening is kids just program the information into their cell phone or similar device and without that device they are lost.
